Different Types of Roofing Materials

We live on a farm and we have a small house that was built many years ago by my father. The house has not been remodeled since it was built and we have always had two dogs and two cats that scratch the entire house non-stop because they like to take the garbage out of the yard. One day I was talking to my brother and his wife about their experiences with their roof and they told me how they got the sod over their heads and then placed the shingles on top and let it sit for three or four years. When the rains came they washed it off, so they never had to do the entire roof again.

Different Types of Roofing System

Since I am from the South, I understand the differences between different types of materials that are used to make roofs. They told me that asphalt shingles were usually used to make a house waterproof and because they are heavier they can be held up against winds that are more powerful than they are. They also said that rubber tiles were very good at keeping the water out and also were quite durable. However, he did tell me that they have seen many houses that have slate roofs that are made of this material but these have been leaking every year because they have not been properly installed.

My father’s house is one of the few homes that use solid slate roofing materials. There are other homes that use some of the other types of roofing materials that are available including concrete tiles and asphalt shingles. Although concrete tiles are great, they are rather expensive because they are heavier than asphalt shingles which makes them cost more to install. So I would recommend using asphalt shingles or concrete tiles as a replacement if your home does not have this type of roofing material.
